Before anyone can trample clues or destroy scent the K9 needs to be put on scene and allowed to cast the PLS and start running the trail of the lost person. There is one problem though, how far away is K9? 10, 15, 45, 60 minutes away? Not everyone has a trailing dog, but almost everyone has two eyes.
This is where Tracking and Sign Cutting comes into practice. Think about it; if someone on scene had training in sign cutting and tracking, someone could already be on the trail. Even if you are on trail with K9, how much better would it be if you had two sign cutters running your flanks.
Over the next year I will be setting up my property for a tracking and signcutting lab, which I will share with you really soon. I will also be discussing K9 Tracking with my nine year old Mal Scout and his two year old son Judge.
Btw, the story above ended up a happy one, somebody picked the two boys up seven miles away from the PLS on a local highway at 22:30 cold and really hungry and Fido made it back home on his own.
